The second biggest season of Mollywood just comes to an end. The vacation is over and Onam hang over still lingering on the ordinary people and they are gifted with one holiday in the form of National strike. Usually holiday is blessing in disguise for films but the hartals and strike hit where it hurts most , a complete box office shut down.
Onam Films have done better business. All the films have done reasonable to above average business from Thiruvonam day to Sunday. Here are the details how they performed.
Loham leads by big distance largely due to one week advance run and earth shattering opening but is facing dip in collection in week days. Though WOM is average Mohanlal � Ranjith combo has delivered a product which is nearing to Super Hit status. It maintained nearly 90 screens in the second week even after 4 films released. Completed around 5,400 shows in 13 days and collected around 10.65 Gross with share totaling around 4.50 Cr. With the budget of 6.50 Cr film is safe with rights prior to release and is raking profit.
Janmapyari heading for a decent run with mixed WOM. Some comedy numbers are working its favour and Kunchako Boban most likely will have solo hit in credit which is due for some time. Collected around 2.85 Cr in 6 days with around 1,70 shows. Thrissur slang brings home certain repeated houseful shows in the region.
Utopiayile Rajavu is a missed chance. Mammooty � Kamal combination has great potentials in the box office but release by the distributor just took away its grand opening chance by releasing it in smaller screens in majority of the centers. Still wondering what was their plan? Once the mixed WOM spreads how a film can sustain its collection in small screens? Film is facing huge drop in weekdays and has secured around 2.75 Cr in 6 days in around 1,700 shows. But film said to be in a safer zone with shoe stringed budget and by acquiring impressive rights.
Kunjiramayanam may the be the biggest profitable venture in the Onam season in the long run. Started of with mixed WOM but later on developed to good WOM due to gracious helping hand by social media new generation supporters. As I said last week, comedy sells and Basil Joseph cleverly unfold it. With a least budget among all other release which is around 3 Cr , the film set to cover its cost from theater run itself in two weeks time. It was released roughly 50 centers and this strategy has proved fatal in collection. 70 plus center would have set it Super hit status in the week first week itself . Even then with lesser screens film managed to cross 2.50 Cr in 5 days in 1,450 shows which is absolutely fantastic. This is the only film which had rising collection graph in the season. Expected to release in 20 plus more screens in second week! Star value of Vineeth Sreenivasan and Aju Varghese on rocket speed upward trend.
Double Barrel has disappointed in both the box office and expectation. Huge budget spoiled like a gambling and the way film was booed at theaters are unheard of recent time. Liji Jose Pallisery has painstakingly tried entirely different genre movie but failed to convince the ordinary film lover. Released in around 80 screens but apart from day one there is nothing to cheer. Collection has been restricted to below 2 cr with no further expectation. The movie has been trimmed and reedited after criticism but those who hailed it as Valliant attempt before the release seemed to be missed the entire film. Experiment but make sure the budget is kept below 5 Cr. This film will be only film which may be termed as disaster while others sail through.
